A wetsuit is designed to keep you warm in cold water by trapping a thin layer of water between your skin and the suit. The thickness of the wetsuit depends on the water temperature. Generally, as the water temperature decreases, the wetsuit needs to be thicker to maintain body heat.
The formula above helps determine the thickness required to maintain a comfortable temperature. However, practical guidelines often suggest specific thicknesses for different temperature ranges:
- Water Temperature > 25°C: No wetsuit needed
- 18°C – 24°C: 3mm thick
- 10°C – 17°C: 5mm thick
- < 10°C: 7mm or more thick
