What is the Elo Calculator & How does it work?

The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in two-player games such as chess. It was invented by Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-American physics professor.

The formula to calculate the new rating after a match is:

R’ = R + K(S – E)
R = current rating
K = scaling factor (commonly 32)
S = score of the game (1 for a win, 0.5 for a draw, 0 for a loss)
E = expected score based on opponent’s rating

The expected score is calculated using:

E = \frac{1}{1 + 10^{\frac{(R_{opponent} – R)}{400}}}
R = your current rating
R_{opponent} = opponent’s rating
