AVIATION & AERONAUTIC CALCULATOR Parasite Drag A precise tool.

What is the Parasite Drag & How does it work?

Parasite drag is the component of an aircraft’s total drag that arises from its shape and surface roughness, as well as other aerodynamic effects such as skin friction and form drag. It is independent of lift and depends on the speed of the air relative to the aircraft.

D_p = \frac{1}{2} \rho v^2 A_d
D_p = Parasite Drag, \rho = Air density, v = Velocity, A_d = Drag area

The formula above shows that parasite drag is directly proportional to the square of the velocity and the drag area, and inversely proportional to the air density.
