A map scale expresses the ratio between a distance on the map and the corresponding distance on the ground. For example, a scale of 1:50,000 means that 1 unit on the map equals 50,000 of the same units in reality.
When you measure a line on the map, the measured length (often in centimeters or inches) must be multiplied by the scale denominator to obtain the real-world length in the same linear unit.
