What is the Cycling Breakaway & How does it work?

A breakaway occurs when a rider or small group separates from the main peloton, attempting to stay ahead until the finish.

The rider’s ability to maintain a higher speed than the peloton depends primarily on power output and aerodynamic drag. For a quick estimate we use a linearised model that relates power (P) to speed (v_r).

v_{r}=\\frac{P}{100}+20
P = power output (W)

By comparing the time needed for the breakaway rider to cover the distance with the time the peloton needs at its average speed, we can predict whether the escape will succeed.
