Player Efficiency Rating
A precise tool.
What is the Player Efficiency Rating & How does it work?
Player Efficiency Rating (PER) is a perβminute rating that attempts to boil down a basketball player’s statistical contributions into a single number. It balances positive actionsβpoints, rebounds, assists, steals, blocksβwith negative ones such as missed shots and turnovers, then normalizes the result by minutes played. The core of the calculation is a weighted sum of boxβscore stats. Positive contributions are added, while missed field goals, missed free throws, and turnovers are subtracted. The raw value is then divided by the minutes the player was on the court to produce a rate, and finally multiplied by a scaling factor that aligns leagueβwide averages. Because PER is expressed per minute, it allows fair comparison between starters and bench players. A higher PER indicates a more efficient and productive performance, making it a valuable tool for analysts, coaches, and fans alike.
\\frac{ (PTS + REB + AST + STL + BLK) – (FGA – FGM) – (FTA – FTM) – TO }{ MIN } \\times factor
PTS = points scored, REB = total rebounds, AST = assists, STL = steals, BLK = blocks, FGM = field goals made, FGA = field goals attempted, FTM = free throws made, FTA = free throws attempted, TO = turnovers, MIN = minutes played, factor = leagueβwide scaling constant.
